May 24-28
Riders: Tommy & Antoine
Destination: Alabama Trip
Comments: Friday the 24th Tommy and Antoine rode the interstate to Leeds, Alabama. We had no problems on the ride except for a massive traffic jam which took us :25 to travel about 1.5 miles due to road construction. Once through this it was clear riding to our hotel in Leeds.
Saturday, we rode a short distance to the Barber Motorcycle Museum. The museum has expanded since I was last there. Besides all the motorcyles in the museum, we were able to watch training on the track by the California Superbike School. It was surprising to see a BMW GS (#1 tag) running on the track keeping up and passing some of the riders. Also surprising was looking at one of the pictures I took, the bike was going fast enough to show a double image of the bike and rider. After spending the day at Barbers, we headed to Oxford AL for the night.
Sunday we left to ride the curvy roads up Cheaha Mountain in eastern Alabama. After a loop around the park, we changed our planned route and rode a route suggested by a clerk at the park store. This proved to be a great suggestion. We continued from there and made it to Pensacola, FL for the night.
Monday we rode to the Naval Aviation Museum. We spent the day viewing all the different planes on display. We also watched two IMAX movies, one on aircraft carriers and one on the birth of flight. Knowing that the Blue Angels were putting on a practice performance on Tuesday, we decided to stay in Pensacola another night.
On our way to the naval base, we encountered another traffic jam of people trying to get in for the show. We made it to the viewing area a few minutes before the show began. The performance of the Blue Angels was great. One of the pilots flying was a female. The show lasted a little over an hour. Once over, we went to view a section of the museum that we had rushed through the previous day and had lunch to let the traffic clear. Then it was heading home, hoping to miss New Orleans traffic. NOT. We caught heavy traffic from the I-610/I-10 merge all the way to Williams Blvd. To add to that, it began to rain and continued to rain until we arrived home.
